Coluccio Read Replies (1) | Respond to of 46821 Hi Jochen, Thanks for filling us in again w.r.t. the broadband positions taken by the German service providers. It continues to surprise how the ISDN appeal has stuck as well as it did (or, was this merely a lack of any alternatives that is the cause for its perpetuation?), and that fiber and wireless deployments have not progressed as far along as I thought they would be by now. How much of this is attributable to cultural issues, as would be the case in Korea, say, where teens and pre-teens have gone wild with gaming, as opposed to elsewhere in the world where it hasn't really caught on all that much? I've read during the past year where e.Biscom of Italy (through their FastWeb subsidiary) has made some inroads into German MTU/MDU markets with their FTTx line of services, but FastWeb's site is no longer in English (that I can tell), so I've lost track of their doings as to how far they've taken this. See the reference to penetrations in Hamburg in this release:Message 16291999 An excerpt:"BitBand Inc., an innovator in VoD technology, announced today that its new Vision and Maestro total VoD solution for media streaming has been implemented and is providing commercial services to Italian households in the Milan metropolitan area, over the e.Biscom advanced Fiber-to-the-Home network. Deployment all across Italy and in other European countries is anticipated within the next few years. Through HanseNet, eBiscom is already present in Hamburg, Germany. ...Through its subsidiaries (FastWeb, e.BisMedia, B2Biscom, HanseNet and e.Voci) and affiliates (Metroweb and Smartcity) e.Biscom provides broadband communications and multimedia services to both business and residential customers, with a fresh approach that encompasses the entire value chain of the information society (deployment and management of an IP-based fiber-optics network, broadband integrated services, creation of video Internet content and B2B services)." Then again, this release wasn't too recently at all. It was written in 2001 ;) Any ideas or knowledge about this type of development taking place elsewhere throughout Germany or nearby countries would be appreciated. Thanks again. FAC frank@fttx.org
