Hangdog looks?LMAO.On the final whistle, the Greek players jumped about with delight while the Spaniards left the field with hangdog looks.

Upstart Greeks earns draw with Spain

Associated Press

6/16/2004

PORTO, Portugal (AP) - Angelos Charisteas scored a second-half equalizer as upstart Greece followed up its stunning Euro 2004 victory over Portugal with a 1-1 tie with Spain on Wednesday.

Fernando Morientes, on loan to Champions League runner-up AS Monaco last season because he couldn't get a start on Real Madrid's star-studded lineup, gave Spain a 28th-minute lead but the Spaniards were unable to improve on that score.

Picking up on a powerful free-kick cross from the right which Spanish defender Ivan Helguera failed to head away in the 66th minute, Charisteas chested the ball down and fired under the body of goalkeeper Iker Casillas for the Greek team, which had upset host Portugal 2-1 in the opening game of the championship.

The result left both sides with four points atop of Group A. Portugal was to face Russia later in the day.

On the final whistle, the Greek players jumped about with delight while the Spaniards left the field with hangdog looks.

``We proved that the win against Portugal wasn't a fluke,'' said Charisteas. ``We showed that we have a strong and serious team.

``We showed our character coming back from behind. Now demands are increasing and against Russia we must get a positive result.''

Spain, with its myriad of stars, put on an excellent display of creative soccer but was unable to get the winning goal. The Greeks were content with the draw.

``Anything could have happened, but this result is not good for us,'' said Spanish coach Inaki Saez. ``We will be tense for the rest of the week.

``We made errors in the middle period of the game,'' he added. ``We risked too little, our centre shots didn't go where they should have.''

The equalizer stung the Spaniards, who had already beaten Russia 1-0.

``Whatever happens later tonight we will have to face Portugal,'' said Spanish midfielder Juan Carlos Valeron. ``And we will have to go for it.''

Otto Rehhagel's Greek team spent much of the game at the Bessa Stadium being outplayed by the classy Spaniards who were roared on by thousands of followers from across the border.

Despite its 2-1 victory over Portugal - its first in a major championship - Greece fielded defending midfielder Konstantinos Katsouranis in place of Angelis Basinas to bolster the defence.

The Greek defenders were quick to decide who were the main danger men on the Spanish team at the Bessa Stadium, clattering striker Raul and winger Vicente, and three were shown the yellow card in the first half.

``What's important to me is the result,'' said Valeron. ``Greece was a hard, rocky team''.

Spain constantly attacked from the wings with Vicente on the left and second-half substitute Joaquin Sanchez rattling the Greek defence.

Up the other end, barring the goal, Casillas got almost no work to do.

The Spaniards deservedly took the lead in the 28th minute when Greek defender Mihalis Kapsis lost possession inside his own area on the left. Raul pounced on the ball and deftly backheeled it to Morientes, who manoeuvred his way wide of two defenders and fired a low shot into the far corner.

The Greeks almost levelled two minutes into the second half when Kapsis won the ball just outside Spain's area and Theodoros Zagorakis fired a 20-yard shot that flew just past the angle of the post and the bar.

Raul should have put the Spaniards further ahead when he arrived unmarked to meet a right wing cross but headed high into the crowd from barely six meters.

The miss looked even more costly when Greece levelled in the 66th minute.

Spain piled on the pressure in the final 10 minutes but to no avail.
