Then, when it came time to actually do what he had signed up to do, he changed his mind.

Maybe this naive mind did sign up to defend his country. Maybe he was naivly thinking of enemies attacking his country.

Being abused by chickenhawks for a colonial war (under the pretext of the notorious imminent thread) and serving particular interests while applying horrible methods, this was a thing he never expected when he signed up.
