Like an election in which few people participate, the market these past few weeks has been really hard to read. One of our regular posters caught a lot of flack a month or so back for suggesting the US political malaise was troubling the investors. It's impossible to say for sure, but I doubt that given the good economic fundamentals the market would be so tentative if the incumbent president had a strong lead in the polls. Of all the things that can increase the risk premium in equities, it is hard to think of any more deadening than political uncertainty, an unpopular war, and the lingering threat of a major terrorist action.
