"As I understand it, the reported unemployment rate is the number of new jobless claims. It reports the percentage of people applying for unemployment benefits. Once the benefits have been exhausted and people are no longer getting unemployment, they are no longer reported."

Read that here on SI. Goes to show you can't believe everything you read on SI. Thanks for straightening it out. Sorry for any confusion.

At least the BLS site did say that many people had the same impression I did...maybe that is where the confusion stemmed from.

Bush has still lost more jobs than any prez since Herbert Hoover despite record deficit spending. With that deficit spending Bush could have just hired 20 million people. Instead, more than a million jobs lost and not likely to get into the black by November. Also wages and benefits are down, and costs for energy, health care and tuitions are all up, three areas where the government has some degree of regulatory and fiscal control. The Bush economy will also result in a record-setting deficit/debt dumped on the next president, and if Bush is re-elected the debt will be much worse than it already is.

You should quit supporting the corrupt Bush-Cheney regime. They have done absolutely nothing to help this country. On every single issue they have at least in part failed and deceived us. Now we have the most corrupt pork barrel spending government in our lives. No corporate special interest that gives handsomely is left unrewarded. It's a real porkathon. And you have the prez and VP lying to us on a regular basis. You can deny this all you like, but the evidence is in.
