China Unicom Adds 701,000 CDMA Subscribers In May

HONG KONG (Dow Jones)--China Unicom Ltd. (CHU) said Thursday the number of subscribers to its code division multiple access, or CDMA, network rose by 701,000 in May, compared with an increase of 680,000 in April.

Of the new customers, 589,000 are using the postpaid service, while the other 112,000 are using prepaid.

The company reported 1.03 million new users of global system for mobile communications, or GSM, last month. That's down from 1.08 million new subscribers in April. Some 79% of the new GSM users are prepaid customers.

By the end of May, China Unicom had 77.77 million GSM customers and 23 million CDMA users.
