I'd be surprised not to see "backwards compatible" speeds on 939. Apart from providing some overlap to smooth the transition of platforms it would offer an opportunity for box makers to get out the "new" 939 systems at attractive price points. I am quite sure there's a little bit of a price differential to be paid for the new boards that could be compensated with a cheaper/slower CPU.

I agree that the narrower the overlap, the better bin splits must be, though. No reason to backfill if you can as well sell something at higher ASPs. Intel certainly opened that window of opportunity for the time being.
