Try the SFC (system file checker) utility. Click on Start then click on RUN, then insert SFC and (enter). This should start up this utility program (it is part of Windows). If it senses something is missing or needs to be replaced, it will ask you to point it to the location of the W98 folder, probably on your W98 installation CD.

Ran SFC........found one corrupted file.....I think it was called system setupdll.exe. I think SFC repaired it because it never came up the second time I ran SFC. I tried to move rundll32.exe and SFC indicated the file was extracted but apparently with no success. I still can't open the components in Control panel......I get an error message indicating that.....windows\rundll32.exe is missing.

I can't find my Win 93 CD [may never have had one] and went to my Win 98 startup floppy to see if that would help. It did not...there was no file for rundll32.exe on it...not surprised.

Then decided to reboot into to the command mode and try to move the rundll file that I downloaded last nite from the desktop to windows\program files where I think it belongs. I forgot the start up floppy was still in my tower......suddenly, I popped into a different screen. It said the following:

** missing or corrupted files:
**himem.sys
[config.sys, line 21]
**ramdrive.sys

In addition it reported that high memory area [HMA] is not available; additional low memory [below 640 kb]will be used.

EDIT: This make sense......since picking up whatever I picked up, I have been experiencing memory crashes.

I then went on to command mode to see if I could copy the rundll32 file I downloaded last nite. Its currently in windows\desktop\rundll32.exe. I got a message: "Overwrite rundll32.exe [yes, no, all]?"

Wasn't sure what to do and rather than making things worse, I decided to ask you all.

If you know what the hell I am being told and you know where rundll32 goes, let me know. TIA.

Let us know if this works for you. You don't need to junk your PC, at least not yet.

Yeah. I hear ya.
