This should be interesting to see how exactly a trade war would play out because the situation today has many different aspects..
In the 20s and 30s the US was basically a self sufficient island unto itself.. they didn't need to import much and for the few things they did places like Liberia (rubber) and South America (bananas :o) filled the bill.. Japan had no raw materials... and I don't think there was any trade of note between the two..

US China trade has gone geometric if not parabolic in the last 10 years so that China is the now US 3rd largest trading partner...
The US now is completely dependent upon foreign oil as was/is Japan so as per usual it really is different this time on many levels.. not that there no common themes.. This ought to be much rougher on the US this go..
