Kristol is pretty much correct. I would put things somewhat differently, however. I would say that neoconservatives remain deeply committed to improving the lot of the common man, and, in that sense, show their origins in liberalism. However, they have decided that the best way to improve things is through democratic capitalism, the benevolent use of our diplomatic and military strength, and an attention to culture as the key to inculcating good habits. For these reasons, they were chased out of liberal circles, which were anti- market, anti- interventionist, and "liberationist" in culture. They found natural allies on the Right, and have since become pretty much conservatives in their policy prescriptions. Nevertheless, they retain a more positive attitude towards government as an agent of improvement, and of intervention abroad as a noble endeavor.........
