So you are saying that the 3700+/3800+/S-939 FX-53 launch was probably a mistake and is preventing AMD from maximizing profits. AMD was already ahead on performance, so why bother releasing these very expensive and relatively low volume parts?

No.

For one thing, 939 is an important infrastructure change. For another, that's not *too* far ahead of Intel, and they can make sufficient quantities of 2.4 GHz parts.

But suppose they could make decent quantities of 2.6 GHz parts *now*, but were also fairly certain that was the last bump on 130nm. It would probably be better to hold 2.6 GHz for another few months, given that Intel is behind, instead of waterfalling prices on their other parts to push 2.6 GHz out now. That's my point, really.

I'll grant you the "Intel panic" factor you mention has something to it, but I think that on balance, when you're already ahead in the speed game, holding back new speed grade introductions often leads to greater overall profits.

So, I don't think it is fair to say that *profits* are a reason for AMD to be ramping speed as fast as possible, given that they are in the lead right now.

That's all.
