bcb, my husband agrees with you; however, I have doubts. Nuclear power requires human perfection--humans are never perfect. No matter how many fail safes are employed, humans manage to overcome them now & then. Just one melt down is enough to render vast stretches of land uninhabitable. Imagine the odds of at least one melt down when nuclear power plants dot the landscape throughout the USA. Is it worth the risk? How would we guard tens of thousands of nuclear power plants from terrorists?

Everything you ever wanted to know about the US energy infrastucture:

eia.doe.gov

Nuclear is currently running at ~ 90% of capacity and has grown as a fraction of the mix despite the fact that no new plants have been built. It is also interesting that the US has the highest production rate of electricity from nuclear in the world. France is second and Japan is third.

I read a balanced study about a year ago on the costs of building new nuclear plants. The conclusion was without some form of liability exemption, it was not going to happen. I will try to dig it up when I have a chance.
