Indiana is considered a safe red state. Bush won Indiana 57% to Gore's 41% in 2000. In a poll last month, Bush led Kerry 54 to 33. (Indianapolis Star/WHIR May 13-19).

Adding Bayh, Kerry takes the lead in Indiana (Bayh is an incredibly popular Senator and former governor). The negatives for Bayh are: 1) he might be a little too conservative for the Democratic base (I don't think this matters in this election), 2) he voted for some of Bush's tax cuts, 3) he is a sitting Democratic senator in a Republican state (so Kerry would lose one vote in the Senate).

With Bayh on the ticket, Indiana is in play and Ohio would probably tilt Kerry.

Since 3-4 top candidates all help Kerry in one key state or another, this may come down to who Kerry feels most comfortable with. He loves Joe Biden, but too bad he's not from Ohio. I know he also likes Richardson, and could live with Edwards.

I expect he'll wait until after the Clinton hoopla to announce. And the Clinton hoopla may reduce the Reagan hoopla. After all, CLinton left power with more approval than Reagan, both of them very high. Of course Clinton didn't die so it's not quite the same thing.
