The "something else" in this case should be the quality of second-quarter earnings. The news on that front may be outstanding because we've seen few negative preannouncements, although we're right in the middle of confession season.

On NBR, they reported an usually low percentage of negative preannouncements relative to positive preannouncements for 2Q. If not before, I think that the combination of strong 2Q announcements combined with strong 3Q forecasts should give the market some lift.

Another possible trigger for semi and semi equip stocks is a rotation of money from biotech and energy companies. Too much money has been betting defensively on an early end of cycle -- in most cases based on the assumption of higher oil prices. Comparatively, the upside potential of semi-related stocks looks better should the economy continue to grow at a strong clip.
