One child is to restrictive but 2 children per couple / woman would bring the world population in balance - slowly shrinking but with improved longevity of life.

IN previous centuries when average life expectancy was around 50 or so years higher fertility rate was adequate but now with life expectancy rising fertility rate must shrink
