Suma, you might also check major stockholders lists of the banks you are interested in for investor Jeffrey Gendell of Tontine Partners. He takes large positions; he can be a long-term investor, but also one who can prod bank management to realize value for shareholders. He specializes in small, local banks/thrifts, and has - or so my reading leads me to believe - a good record here for getting taken out in takeovers. Also, fwiw, in an article in Barron's he said he was buying small banks in areas where there was coal mining: he believes coal business will do well, thus putting money in hands of local miners and local businesses. He figures the local banks consequently will do well and could be buyout candidates.
