what's "normal" in a "free and unfettered" economy is the rapid evolution of a small but fabulously wealthy ownership class, and a large but poor working class.

Any engineer can tell that this is the expected behavior of a system with unregulated feedback. In economics, the rich have more ability to increase their riches and the poor have little such ability. Stable systems arise when the feedback is adjusted such that the more positive signals are damped, and the more negative ones are also prevented from amplifying their negativity.
