I think you have to dig a little deeper than the Bush good vs. evil sound bites. There's the problem I touched upon way back in the thread: #reply-20234206. "None of this half-assed stuff where we hinder ourselves with guilt and self-doubt." It's good to be introspective, but personally I think we Americans on the whole have been way too intellectual for our own good. There is value to the simplicity that Bush brings in his viewpoint, and it's all about taking actions and getting results over worrying about the complicated details. Sure, the devil is IN the details, and we're definitely paying for it now. But I think too many people have gone in the other direction, i.e. paralyzing ourselves because of all the "what ifs." What if we foster more terrorism? What if we trample on human rights, even for our enemies? What if we hit any civilians? What if we can't pay for it all? Meanwhile, I guarantee you that the terrorists don't burden themselves with such introspection. They've already decided we're the problem. They've already decided that our lives aren't worth spit. They won't be impressed with anything except victory, i.e. breaking our will to fight for and defend what we believe in and what resources we need to sustain our societies. They're motivated by a twisted religious zeal, corrupted by lust for power and pride of spirit. It's human nature, and no amount of intellectualism can ever explain it away or deal with it. And you wonder why I call it a "crusade on their part" and why I don't buy any of this secular B.S. (if you excuse my "French"). This truly is a struggle between good and evil. Of course, in reality it's a lot more complicated than just that, but in the simplest terms it really does boil down to that. Tenchusatsu P.S. - And I haven't even answered any of your questions. Forgive me; I'll answer them later if you want.
