why people are dabbling in issue they know very little about is beyond me

This summs things up nicely.
Unfortunately Haim forgot to direct the post to himself.
Escalation of violence just escalates violence.
Terrorism is not fought the way WWII was fought.
It is high time someone here learned that.
All Bush has done is escalate violence and world tension and hatred towards the US.

In fact you have to be a near idiot not to see it. I do not think Haim is an idiot so it must be something else. Blinded by his background? Is that it? Blinded by faith? Blinded by the idiot in the whitehouse? Whatever it is Haim is totally blind.

OT - >>> My sense is that what the world objects to is the U.S. being so powerful a country as it is, and so overtly operating from the vantage point of its own national "interest"<<< it is very true and would agree with most of you 2 paragraphs in your post.

The essence of the issue you brought up is how WE want to live in a global village with freedom of movement of people around the world who are freely choosing their place of residence.

I for one voted for the US - as I became a US citizen after being born in Lugoj, Romania.

Do I try to impose my Rumanian believes or social orders on to my new community or new adopted state ? - NO

Would I wish Romania to adopt US social order? - YES I would

Do I try to impose my wishes in a violent way ? - NO
Do I try to impose my wishes in a sanctionary way ? NO
Do I try to pursue my wishes in a quiet and conversational way ? YES

That is a conduct I would strive that all the people in world would follow.

As to another issue implied in your post - by example

Joe had not been as lucky as Mike and was born to not so simple God fearing parents working hard to make ends meet in a small town in the Appalachian Mountains - hardly had time or money to attend college and needed to start working at a young age. Upon social pressure he married Susan from next hamlet – both working in the car industry with it's cyclical nature and tendency to outsource more and more jobs. Today, he is not better of as his parents – to the contrary possible worst.

On the other hand Mike was born in one of the thriving cities on the US coast with ambitious parents who worked hard and set aside every penny they could for Mike tuition, even with meager means they instilled into Mike the desire to succeed read and learn and secure a high paying career. Mike went to college and continued to graduate school working during the weekends to support himself, forgoing social entertainment and outings. He graduated with honors and is working on his PhD and already has an offer for a job paying 6 figures a year 2 to 3 times that of his parents. Now he is ready to marry one of his colleagues with similar background and income and start a family

Now compare Joe and Mike - would it be justified that Joe go and harass Mike for his compensation? - or later on would it be justified that Joe at a time he is out of work and does not have money to feed his children to go and take Mike's kids as hostage ?

Joe is frustrated he is out of work - but is it Mike fault? Why would be justified that a honest hard working Joe turn to shadowy ways of supporting his family?

Do I feel empathy for Joe and his family yes - can I solve this economic and social divide? I do not know but will try to save at least Joe children and guide them on Mike's path.

On of the things I like about treasury secretary O’Neil was that he tried to go out and learn why other poor nations are as they are and I assume / speculate that he wanted to find solutions how to help them and by this to lower US antagonism in the world.

His short minded critics complained that he does not tend to US interests and economic needs and waste his time traveling to poor nations – I think they were wrong.

If my assumption are true then his departure was a big loss to a WS dominated administration.

P.S. even of not justified, IMHO if “Mike” chose to be a WS type he does not deserve any sympathy if taken hostage or harmed
