Alaska's Tongass Forest Stripped of Roadless Rule Protections

On Christmas Eve, the Bush Administration delivered a holiday gift to the timber industry by approving a temporary exemption of Alaska's Tongass National Forest from the Roadless Rule. The action opened up 9 million acres of the nation's largest national forest to logging and other development despite hundreds of thousands of comments opposing the exemption from around the country. The Forest Service is expected to announce a broader proposal affecting roadless protections in the lower 48 states, including 2 million acres in Washington State, in the coming months.

Sounds like there won't be many trees in it. Enjoy the mud.
