Bill and everyone,

Whether it's bits and bytes or bits of silver

A little bit of context: Frank has been unsuccessfully trying for a long time to get me to buy a digital camera. I've been unsuccessfully trying for a long time to get Frank interested in master photographers of all eras. It wasn't until this weekend when he saw HCB's famous picture of the little boy carrying the bottle of wine that his interest was piqued. So, he called me to learn a little bit about HCB and took advantage of the moment to sell my wife on the idea of allowing me to buy a digital camera.

Frank asked me to recommend a book that contains HCB's writing about the decisive moment and his most important pictures. I don't know of one so I recommended two small, inexpensive books, The Mind's Eye, which is HCB's writings including his piece about the decisive moment, and the HCB book from Aperture's Masters of Photography series. Does anyone have a better recommendation?

By the way Bill, thanks for not dissing my simplistic anniversary card. Though I'm rather proud of it -- I've only been a serious Photoshopper for about 3 months, all due to Frank's encouragement, and my graphics design talents are limited -- I can only barely imagine what someone such as yourself who works with Photoshop daily in your career could produce.

Now I'm off to check out that other photography folder Michal mentioned yesterday.
