Polls at the time showed popular support for the war, which was why people like Kerry supported the war. They feared public opinion.

Somehow, the U.S. works like a helicopter: its economic buoyancy is the horizontal rotor that lifts it up while warfare is the tail rotor that gives it direction and prevents the U.S. helicopter from jerking about in midair and crashing eventually....
