Blowback is a descriptive term. It implies that the weapon used was either too big for the job, or was handled incorrectly, but it says nothing about the merits of the action itself.

The Cold War may have resulted from the decision to suspend the allied advance through Italy and Central Europe to form the second front via invasion of France. There were many many interactions at that time which played a part in the later history.

My personal finger pointing goes to Truman's attitude at the close of the war. He felt too secure behind a nuclear weapon monopoly and undamaged industrial output and so took a hard and arrogant stance in the postwar world. The world caught up sooner than he expected.
