LONDON -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd., the world's largest foundry chip maker, has bought chip making equipment from ASML Holding NV worth about $58 million, according to a report in the Scotsman which cited a Monday (June 21) filing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange as the source of the information.

ASML makes lithography equipment used to define lines and spaces in the layers of an integrated circuit, but the report did not say how many machines TSMC had purchased.

The price for equipment for use in leading edge manufacturing processes is thought to be pushing up towards $20 million per machine. However, deals, when bundled with support contracts and refurbishment of older machines, become complex and the actual price paid for individual machines is usually kept secret. Companies with the potential to purchase large numbers of machines, such as TSMC, are believed to get large discounts.
