For example, I thought Cheney was baiting the other day when he responded to the staff report and the Times pieces by picking and snapping and challenging. Every time you respond non-constructively you're prolonging a fight. Had he said that, well, the report is close but he'd prefer a bit different phraseology, wording that was a bit more precise, wording that wouldn't have caused such a terrible misunderstanding at the Times, yada, yada it would have been disarming. Instead we get more din. Now, obviously Cheney can't change style in midstream to respond to this particular incident. My point is that this finger-in-the-eye tack that the Bushies take just provokes an exaggerated response and further escalation. Nastiness and hatred beget nastiness and hatred. It doesn't seem to ever occur to the Bushies to try to defuse these things, only to fight back, often over next to nothing.Personally, I think they are doing it themselves. For political purposes. Country be dammed. Karen, it takes two sides to create this kind of hostility. You keep trying to attribute it all on one side. If "they" would just stop. Well, what about you stopping? If someone hits you and you hit back, you've become party to the fight and you're to blame, too, if damage is done. It's the negligence notion of "last clear chance." You could have avoided the fight but you didn't so you're responsible for it. Someone is going to have to step up to the plate here, someone who loves his country more than he wants to rub the other side's nose in it. Anyone who is not part of the solution is part of the problem, IMO.
