Hmmmm.... Your problem is a puzzler. I've thrown every scenario I can think of at the login screen, and it handles them all correctly. If it doesn't think your loginID exists, it tells you so. If it doesn't think your password is correct, it tells you so. If everything's okay, it logs you in, though the "Keep me logged in" box is useless right now since I'm not doing the long-term cookie placement that box is intended for. Cookies work a lot differently in ASP.NET and I haven't completely gotten my head around them, so I'm avoiding them for now.

Is the error occurring when you hit the Login button, or is it after you've typed in a loginID and password?
