Thomas,

I think you're quite right about the changing economics of self-publishing. I've been checking into a number of different ways of printing, and there are a lot of possibilities. One of the things that is changing is definitely colour printing. With the growth in popularity of the graphic novel, there are a lot of printing companies that are catering to that genre, and while the subject matter of my book would be very different, the printing process could be somewhat similar. There's some pretty fierce competition going on between these printers, so the prices tend to be quite good, even for small run publications. Most are very flexible about the format in which you submit your book and favour an electronic version (definitely my own preference).

And yes, binding is another area which has changed a lot. There's a lot more available in the way of cover printing, lamination, binding, etc.. than when I was involved in this kind of thing about 10 years ago. Some of the innovations are also pretty neat, so it's good to do some research beforehand so that I know what might be possible and can design accordingly.

The CD replication is also very cheap. I've already checked that out a bit and most services offer ridiculously low prices for duplication, packaging, etc.. Again, there's cut-throat competition among those companies, so they are willing to offer quite a lot for a very competitive price.

Thanks again for your input!
