LOS ANGELES - Heading into Friday's U.S. debut of Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, at least one question remains: has the director crafted a movie for all audiences or will it only play well to anti-Bush partisans?

Even if the latter is the case and the Oscar-winning filmmaker is simply "preaching to the choir," Moore said that is fine with him.

"Don't diminish the importance of the choir," Moore told Reuters in a recent interview. "That choir has been asleep; that choir has been ignored ... and if this movie wakes that choir up and gets them singing, I will have made, I believe, a significant contribution."

Moore defined his "choir" as African Americans, young people, working-class citizens and the poor.

"These people are the most affected by decisions that are made in Washington, D.C. and yet they vote the least," he said.

Fahrenheit 9/11, which links President Bush, his family and business associates with prominent Saudis including the family of Osama bin Laden, has raised the ire of the president's supporters this election year.

One organization, Move America Forward, has launched a campaign to try to stop theaters from showing what it calls "anti-American propaganda."

"I expect them to come at me with everything they got," he said. In fact, Moore has established a campaign-like "war room" to counter any negative publicity about him and the movie.

He also said his detractors should see Fahrenheit 9/11, and contest it based on merit and not what they read or hear.

"Then, if they want to debate me about my points in the film, then let's have that debate. It will be a good and healthy debate," he said.
