UK VAT at 17.5% is draconian, and an effective tax. Few dodges, some restaurants etc fiddle the books for a while but are usually caught. The UK tax on fuel (about 80%) is also most effective. There are plenty of government jobs going as inspectors too ("enforcers"), one local business guy, who runs a van, had his vehicles fuel checked three times in one day... every day is not unusual.

I think the USD buys more in the USA then a UK pound does in the UK.
