T, I haven't read it, though I did read a good review of it. Hamilton was, like his killer, Aaron Burr, a bit of a hellraiser. Which is funny given that he is supposedly the father of the American conservative movement (as opposed to Pro-British Tories).

I remember a line from a movie about Benedict Arnold on tv. Arnold was complaining to Washington that Congress would not pay him. Washington said, effectively, "just be cool and wait. You'll get paid." And Arnold asked, "do they withhold Your Excellency's pay?" Washington hemmed and hawed at that and tried to change the subject. I remembered that George didn't take any pay and put a little checkmark against the writer's credibility. <G>

It is easier for wealthy people to forego pay than for poor folks. As the French say, the law is the same for all. It is just as illegal for a rich man to sleep under a bridge as for a poor man to do so. <G>
