Making Israel recognize Arafat at this point is kind of equivalent to making the U.S. recognize Ayatollah Khomenei in the '80s.

Quite simply, these are not equivalent. Khomenei was a religious extremist, and uncompromising. Arafat is secular, and willing to compromise.

I don't equate Sharon with Arafat. I don't like him, he's done some bad things in his career, but he's no Arafat.

I don't equate them, either.

1. Sharon has committed far greater atrocities than Arafat.
2. Sharon has not been willing to concede that the Palestinians have a legitimate desire to have a homeland in Palestine. Arafat accepted the Israeli desire for a homeland in Palestine three decades ago.
