I think you are referring to Emerson's sense of equal sensitivity through time. I don't agree with it. Within written history we find compelling evidence of sensitivity and intellect commensurate with the common weal. But written history is the lesser part of a blink.

Emerson was a mystic. That was his right to be. I happen to enjoy that sort of high-blown language! I seldom read modern literature (my loss, I am sure). And I mean that. I know I am missing much that is good and wise. But on the other hand....I can never catch up to the past.
