One could do worse. You may not like the solutions of the right, but mixing them with the failures of the left is not going to solve the problems I agree. I'd like to take the right and the left and put them out to pasture in some meditative place for a couple of years, and let people from the center - a zone that encompasses a pretty fair spectrum of ideas, but allows rational discussion and compromise - set about finding some solutions. We certainly aren't going to get anything productive from the ideologues on either side. The criticism of the Administration will go from, "you are doing it the wrong way!" to "why didn't you stop this!" in a hurry if we get hit badly. When that happens - and unfortunately, it looks more like "when" than "if", the only honest answer the administration will be able to give is that they tried, and what they tried didn't work. If AQ stages a major attack, a lot of people will want to know why the resources that were put into getting Saddam, who was not a threat, were not put into getting AQ, which was a threat. It's not an unreasonable question. Right now we are facing a terrible situation in Iran that cannot be really dealt with until after the election. Think what that means. We are so divided we can't rationally deal with a major nuclear threat to us for political reasons. It's not a good situation, and our options, even after the election, will be very thin. It's nice to speculate about doing the job with surgical air strikes, but that depends on the quality of our intel. Will anybody trust that, given recent history? Full scale military action is a pretty nasty prospect, for a whole lot of reasons. I'm not sure the political will is there. I'm recalling all those discussions before the Iraq war, when people were saying how an invasion of Iraq would put the mullahs in their place and scare them away from any aggressive moves. I guess we can all see how that worked out.
