<<But strategically, to try to improve overall political conditions in the middle east, trying to set up a democracy in Iraq is not that bad of an idea>>

...just about as good an idea as "trying to set up a democracy" in Vietnam in the '60's was, and it'll have the same end result (lots of dead Americans, lots of wasted clownbux and an unfriendly if not outright hostile government installed when its over).

This is a conflict that requires smarter tactics than our so-called leaders are able to employ. That's why you see so much outrage and frustration from many on this board. We didn't need to invade Iraq, hell, invading Iran, Korea or Saudi all make more sense. Cheney was fixated on it 'cause he phucked up in Gulf War I by not finishing the job then and he was concerned about his place in the history books. There IS no other explanation that makes sense, not WMD's, not al-Quieda (woulda made more sense to invade Pakistan or Indonesia if we REALLY wanted to get 'em) and not oil.

"It's hard to calculate how many future attacks have been avoided due the death of the would be perpetrators dying in combat either in Iraq or Afghanistan. "

harder to calculate how many future attacks their friends, children, and relatives (along with the friends, children, and relatives of civilians we killed) will be caused by our invasion. i think you need to question the motives more so than the actions and their intended/unintended consequences and that's where you will see that our leadership has no more claim to a "moral high ground", whatever that is, than saddam.
