His "honesty" and change of heart happened rather suddenly ONCE HE WAS CAUGHT. Until that he regularly ridiculed (and worse) people in chronic pain, so it's hard to be sympathetic with him now.

Edit: BTW, I think you're right when you suggest he's pathetic.

Well, I for one will never forget Rush's bashing of those addicted to drugs throughout the years as "weak willed", or without good moral values.... Funny how quickly things can change when one walks a few "sky high miles" in their shoes for awhile.
