SANTA CLARA, Calif.--ASML Holding NV of the Netherlands and Nikon Corp. of Japan were the winners in the lithography market in 2003, according to VLSI Research Inc.

In total, lithography suppliers garnered $3.9 billion in revenues in 2003, up 14 percent from 2002, according to the firm.

"Dutch lithography giant ASML finished 2003 as the number one stepper supplier in terms of revenue generated," according to the report. "From a units standpoint however, they were outsold by Nikon by almost 100 units."

Both Canon and Nikon benefited from brisk sales of display steppers, which grew 35 percent in 2003. In terms of unit shipments in 2003, the display stepper market now represents about one quarter of the worldwide stepper market, according to the research firm.
