In the case of the Islamic fundamentalists, it is idle to talk about the odds stacked against them, since their world view is that if they are pious enough, Allah will ensure their success. Only by causing them to doubt their ideology can we turn the tide. The are certainly not martyring themselves merely as a gesture, or even for the ticket to Paradise, they are doing so as a means of recapturing Islamic hegemony.

The secular terrorists among the Palestinians actually have a chance of turning opinion against Israel and forcing it into an untenable security position because population transfer is not an option, and tout le monde is desparate for peace.

As for diplomacy, what do you think permitted the disengagement with Al Sadr's militia, except the willingness to let the imams talk him down from his ledge?
