<The Canucks' Todd Bertuzzi will be heading to court to face a charge of assault causing bodily harm.>

I have been a hockey fan all my life...grew up playing the game played in highschool and college....even had a tryout for the Olympics (68) but got drafted into the Army. Here's my take on this.

When the mask was introduced into the game, it changed profoundly. You would rarely go for someone's head unless you wanted to take them out, and it was usually with a fist...not a stick (the exception being Gordie Howe). Hockey became like lacrosse on ice with regular high stick play. Eventhough NHL doesn't require masks, so many players out of the college systems are used to playing with them and a stick to the head is no big deal. When you combine that with players that are bigger and faster because of conditioning techniques, plus modern defensive center ice traps, players are going to be at eachother.

In this particular case, if I had been the commisioner, I would have thrown him out of the league. Problem is, Betman is not a hockey guy and doesn't have the context and history of the league.

The NHL needs to decide if they want fighting to attract fans or if they want a wide open (no trap) game to attract fans with the occassional scrap among the players. Hockey is a passionate game and there will always be a few brawls, but they need to throw a few guys out permanently if they slam a player with a stick and injure them....the message will then get around.

IMO...
