You make several interesting points in your reply, pointing to some areas I'm not very familiar with.

I find it noteworthy that cellular data in German implementations of UMTS is less expensive than voice, with the latter costing less than the former by a factor of >2, for example.

I couldn't begin to tell you how many, or what percentage, of American companies use VoIP. I suspect that many more companies are using VoIP for LAN-based IP PBX (TDM PBX replacements), and some fraction of those are doing gateway-supported VoIP between branches over T1 lines and corporate intranets. Not many of those, however, are using VoIP _yet_ over the Internet proper, I'd venture to say.
