Let's see if this affects the markets on Monday....
cnn.com
Prime Minister Zafarullah Khan Jamali announced his resignation and the dissolution of his Cabinet on Saturday, ending months of speculation that his relationship with the country's military ruler was strained.

Let me point out a few things that I think I know.

1) Perhaps he is or was fearing for his life. I do not blame him. Attacks against him have been many.

2) He was our "friend" in the war on terror so that is probably not a good thing.

3) The vast majority of Pakistanis (via the last poll I saw), support Bin Laden over the US. I do not believe this was the case after 911. Bush squandered goodwill worldwide with this stupid invasion of Iraq.

4) Pakistan has Nukes

5) Pakistan has threatend to use them (against India).

6) Depending on support from leaders in countries where the leaders are under constant threat and the population more or less hates the US might not be the smartest thing to do. Then again, on this issue I am not sure what are choices are.

7) We should have considered worldwide ramifications of our invasion of Iraq. We clearly did not and there is a reasonable chance that his resignation has some roots in his support for the US that were not supported by the general population in Pakistan. Seriously, I want to emphasize this point. Bush did a mad rush to war expecting flowers. This could be a very very unfortunate unintended consequence down the road.

8) I know nothing about the guy slated to take his place. Does anyone? I bet they are up burning the midnight candles tonight in the Bush Adnministration tonight trying to find out every damn thing they can about his POSSIBLE replacement(s).

9) I said all along that Pakistan was a far far far more serious threat to the US than Iraq. It is conceivable that the US drove Pakistan to the point of instability with our stupid actions in Iraq.

10) Lets see how this all plays out. This new guy may be pro US, but he is far more likely to be LESS pro-US that the person he replaced.

11) This is not good news for Bush, and for once, you will hear me say it is not good news for the US either.

Mish
