It may also be that the option values are adjusted periodically to account for lapses, change in stock value (affecting the probability that the options will get exercised), employee terminations and the like. We used to calculate option expense and deduct it for tax purposes and we made similar adjustments each year to bolster our argument that this was a legitimate deduction. Will
