Crime is a VERY useful means of social control. I mean, look at the whole drug war. Can you think of a better way to lock up undesirables at will then the sweeping drug laws we have in America? Like all these police depts want to give up all the money they get for fighting drug "crime"? There are strong incentives to maintain the status quo when it comes to our criminal justice system. The sad thing is that we could free up police to fight more serious crime if we decriminalized a drugs like marijuana and made hotwiring cars impossible. Those are two crime problems that seem rather easy to solve. Why don't we?
