Hi Steve,

My Canon SLR has the IS built into the lens I bought. I'm guessing since Canon has lenses with IS they don't need to put it into SLRs. I'm guessing they figure it would be redundant. There are several great Canon lenses with IS. There are 10 different lenses with IS. My 28-135 is a great lens and it costs under $400 now.

Personally I swear by Canon. I think they make the best glass out there and several of my Pro photographer friends feel the same way. I have all their glass to play with as well as mine.

I'm really looking at the 10d right now found it for under $1300 and it is a vast improvement over my d60.

Clean

Image Stabilization

Steve, I am a big Canon fan as well. I purchased the G1 as my third digital camera,
bought a G2 for my brother and my uncle, and purchased an A70 as a pocketable back-up
camera. I also own a Canon Elura video camera. Much of the image stabilization was first
a feature on videocameras and I never knew how this could be done "on the fly" while filming.

I think if you purchase a camera with 10x optical zoom that there is a need for IS.
If you purchase a camera with 2x or 3x zoom, or if the camera can function well
at higher ISO or if you shoot with lenses wide open the need for image stabilization
just isn't there. For this reason it is an extra bell or whistle that doesn't
necessarily sell more cameras.

That is my take on it.
