But since you want to go back to 1971-1972, let's compare Bush and Kerry: Kerry volunteered for combat and was a Silver Star winner, performing heroically under the toughest jungle conditions. After going home he decided to do soemthing about trying to stop the war and save lives so he led one march with his fellow vets. Shortly thereafter he quit the VVAW and was involved in no further major protests. He also spoke to congress representing veterans letting the countryn know how crazy and awful the war had become. It worked. Kerry helepd end the war, savings many thousands. Bush claimed to have supported the war but after dodging the draft, did some training them basically disappeared and did not report for duty in 1972 at all. He also skipped his mandatory medical exam which included for the first time a drug test. Bush was well known in those days as a hard drinking and possibly cocaine-snorting playboy who felt he was above the rules. He left the Guard eight months early to go to Harvard. Cheney also dodged the draft. Looking back at 1971, it was a tumultuous time. The VVAW was an important organization yet Kerry clearly did not like some of the radicalism being talked about within the group, so he quit. The FBI who was tailing him for Nixon reported that Kerry was a "moderate". The former head of the VVAW called Kerry "more conservative" than any of the others. Sure enough, Kerry left that group, never worked with Jane Fonda or any of the other radicals, and went into public service as a career, playing by the rules and working inside the system for positive change against powerful special interests.
