If it was a set up, it was a very stupid one. Getting the US more enmeshed in the ME is a very bad thing right now. Anyone could look at iraq and see it had the possibility to implode when Saddam died, or was deposed, and it would have been a very good thing not to have the US blamed for that implosion- now, of course, we will be. The Kurds won't just be a nightmare for the Shiites and Sunnis- they will be a pain in the butt for Turkey. And who could fail to see Iran gloating over the turmoil, using the turmoil as cover, and, indeed, manufacturing some of the turmoil. If this was planned it was planned by idiots. If it was an accident, it was allowed to progress to the point of idiocy. It would be nice if things turned out well for the Iraqis and for the stability of the ME- but I just don't see how that can happen now- there are too many agendas running counter to each other, and far too many running counter to what the US would like.
