Was talking to a chip vendor the other day and the cost to build a first prototype chip in the 90 nm technology is now approaching $10-12M. The masks are so complex and diffacult to build. There are at least 25 layers of mask now.

No wonder there are no ASIC startups any more.

What about Motorola?

They "saw the light" with 1x but spent many man hours and resources for WCDMA chips. Is their product considered successful and do you think they will eventually outsource?
