42% approval rating for Bush now means the vast majority of undecideds will break for Kerry unless Kerry somehow blows it. No president has ever been re-elected with less than a 52% approval rating.

Kerry is waging a very careful campaign, so I doubt he will make any visible errors. The campaign will begin in earnest for Kerry after the July 4th weekend when he is expected to announce his VP. That is also when Kerry will make clear to voters exactly what his VISION is. Though Kerry has been working very effectively in local battleground areas, he has not made his national pitch yet.
