Re Yellow ribbon.
Long ago ..now...during my collage days..
I took to working on the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers as a deck hand...(it was a Mark Twain 'thing')
Our cook loved the Tony Orlando and Dawn tune..
'Tie a Yellow ribbon..blah..blah..blah...blah..blah.....'
and sang it all the time..
(she was a tug boat Annie type..through and through.
what I would call a Tough Cookie..<g>)
During one wet spring tour ..out on the water..
we had to tie our boat..
and it tow of barges ,to trees
along the bank..as the high water was quite dangerous,
often tearing out whole groups of cotton woods as the current pushed against the boat....
it was a bit nerve racking...
lots of noise...falling branches..
thumping of tree trunks against the boat...ect
The Cook became more than a bit unglued due to this activity..
and started calling other boats in our immediate area looking for a Sweetheart...to escape with...
One of the other Captains up river
took to flirting with her (in jest) and asked where she was..
So..she took a piece of yellow cloth...
and tied it out at the head of our tow
on a pole stuck in a coal barge...........
hoping he would see it....
When the other boat called back that they could not see through the thick rain and fog..
she took the dingy out ...looking for 'Him'
and
in essence...'jumped ship'...
her leaving..left us.. 'Cook Less'
(she was fired immediately for wandering off)
so I volunteered to fill in.........

So now ..after all these years...seeing yellow ribbons reminds me of that time
and that oh so goofy song...
