There was an interesting article I read on the collapse of the Soviet Union, under Gorby, and during the Reagan era.

According to the author Reagan was not the reason and his policies, including military buildup, had little to do with the issue. The real reason was that the oil production of the Soviet Union peaked, and then rapidly declined, causing severe economic disruption and at that time collapse.

The inference for the US, accordingly, is not positive.

Thoughts Bert, anyone?

This is what bad leadership for the past two decades has done to us. More than 20 years time mostly wasted when good leadership could have steered us away from our oil dependency, which has become as bad as a drug addict on heroin.... By 1980 it was crystal clear that if we did not change course radically, the future would be filled with a lot of trouble and disasters. I did my part, telling this to anyone who would listen, and buying solar panels and efficient light bulbs and doing my best to conserve energy.
