I have a good excuse for missing the game. Wifie took me to dinner and to see Clapton play at the Garden for my birfday. Whatta show! To be honest I wasn't expecting much. It seems that my musical tastes have drifted in several directions since coming up with my SI handle. I've actually come close to changing the silly name several times. But then I was afraid that people wouldn't recognize me... Anyhow, Claptons latest CD is a tribute to Robert Johnson. It's pretty good but to me it lacks a bit of soul (in my stupid opinion). I figured most of the concert would be him sitting in a chair playing an old resonator geetar and stomping his foot. Man it was much different than that. The show started out with some unknown dudes as the warm up band. They made sure that everybudy knew their name before they got off the stage. They totally blew me away. They are a young group of dudes (with mucho soul) who are mostly related to each other, called Robert Randolph and the Family Band. Robert plays a lap guitar with the energy and finesse of Hendrix. Totally amazing were the sounds coming from it. And the band was so tight. As he hammered away on this organ looking guitar, the drummer was pounding away is synchonicity. Then just as the crowd was caught up in this frenzy, Robert gets up and switches positions/instrument with the drummer. They jam for a while and then the bass player switches instruments. Then the key boardist and rythem guitar player switch. After a while you can't remember who played what. (Still sounding very tight and surprised by the solos.) This goes on for a while and eventually they get back to where they all started. By now everyone in the crowd is up on their feet and whispering yells to each other asking, "Who the fug are these guys!?" I'm telling ya, these guys just blew me away. It made me feel good that there are some young dudes there to bring the blues to new heights. So now I begin wondering how the heck is Clapton gonna top these dudes. He did by not trying to. Instead he seemed to be highlighting a bunch of young guys in his band. He had a real talented group of his own that brought new energy to him. He did a version of I Shot The Sherriff that was incredible. He reinvented it. He was dipping into that source of energy that makes up the universe. The same source that Robert Randolph was pulling from. The same one that Mozart, Michaelangelo, Einstein, Poe, and Polvo pulled from. Then for the encore Clapton had Robert Randolph jam with him as they bounced wicked riffs back and forth to each other like two tennis players. I was really caught by surprise. I really never expected to be blown away like I was tonight. I think this dude Randoph and his family band are gonna be something huge. I'm glad Clapton is helping to give them exposure. Scooter, keep your eye open for them. They are really something special to see and hear. Anyhow, this review is getting rather long and probably hard to follow due to this late hour.
